Review

I had the pleasure of attending a wonderful performance of the new musical Sister Act at Derby Dinner Playhouse last week and it will not disappoint!  BUY YOUR TICKETS NOW!  This show will sell out!

I have always adored Whoopi Goldberg in the movie, Sister Act, so I was curious to see how they would turn this story b2ap3_thumbnail_Sister-Act-Photo.jpginto a Broadway Musical!  While the musical closely follows the same storyline as the movie, there are some funny additions and a new romance with the title characters, Eddie and Deloris.  It is also set in 1977 – 1978 which added a Motown vibe to a lot of the music.  I loved that the show incorporated so many fun musical numbers with the male characters in this show, as well as the lovable nuns!

When disco diva, Deloris Van Cartier (played by Khadijah Amanee), witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place the cops are sure she won't be found: a convent!  Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and uptight Mother Superior (played by Jillian Prefach).  Mother Superior is, of course, the harshest nun with Deloris but they have a great on-stage connection that keeps you laughing all night long.   Amanee (Deloris) has a voice that soars!   She does a great job with her character having just enough independence to stand up to Mother Superior (Prefach) when needed, but also able to show compassion to her fellow “sisters.”

The nuns are all heart-warming, both with their singing, dancing, and strutting around in sequins!  Kaylee Annable, Kayla Walsh, &  Tina Jo Wallace provide spectacular performances. Wallace had me in stitches as Sister Mary Lazarus with her quick comebacks and awesome dance moves!  Plus, who doesn’t want to see a NUN THAT RAPS!    Kaylee Annable had a beautiful, moving sound to her vocals and you just kept waiting for her to take it one step higher and higher!  Kayla Walsh plays the loveable Sister Mary Patrick (Kathy Najimy’s character in the movie) and you just want to hop on stage and be her best friend because you know she would be there for you in a heartbeat!

Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community but, in doing so, blows her cover.  Soon, the gang is giving chase, only to find themselves up against Deloris and the power of her newly found sisterhood.

SISTER ACT is based on the hit 1992 film. Featuring original music by Tony- and eight-time Oscar winner, Alan Menken, this uplifting musical was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.  Filled with powerful gospel music, outrageous dancing and a truly moving story, SISTER ACT is a sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship.

Derby Dinner’s production of SISTER ACT is directed by Lee Buckholz with Musical Direction by Scott Bradley and Choreography by Heather Paige Folsom.

The show had us tapping our feet to the beat, it is just a feel-good show and you can’t help but to sing along during the Encore!  If you loved this movie, go see this show!  You do not want to miss it!  Take a few girlfriends and have a Mom’s Night Out!  Or get a much needed date night with your significant other!  You won’t regret it! SISTER ACT is recommended for ages 13 & up.

Derby Dinner Playhouse will present the Broadway musical comedy, SISTER ACT, through May 28, 2017.  For ticket information please call 812-288-8281 or visit www.derbydinner.com
