My family and I had the amazing opportunity of attending Monster Jam at Freedom Hall last night.  I've always been under the impression that this event was most suited for boys of all ages, not quite. We have three girls that are eleven, eight, and a soon to be seven years old that ooh-ed and aah-ed with the best of those rowdy boys.  Though the show didn't start till 7:30, the doors opened at 6:30. Arriving at the Expo Center there was an $8 parking fee per car. The traffic, parking, and ticket windows weren't an issue for the early-birds, as the staff were very efficient and attentive.

Once inside, the first thing I noticed was a roped off section with tables and the Monster Jam banner that would later serve as the drivers b2ap3_thumbnail_mj12.jpgautograph tables. Of course, it wouldn't be an event without the merchants and vendors, right?

The best part of finding our seats was running into the drivers. The kids had the pleasure of taking pictures with Dalton Millican, of Team Blue Thunder as well as, one of the crowd favorites, Becky McDonough of Team El Toro Loco, Daron Basl of Team Monster Mutt Rottweiler, and his twin brother Aaron Basl of Team NEA Police.

Once it was MONSTER JAM TIME, the roar of the engines firing up in sync with each other, was like the rumbling sounds of fireworks at Thunder Over Louisville!  My kids couldn't contain their excitement as the monster trucks began warming up by driving around the obstacle for the first competition. First, the Wheelie Competition took me by surprise at how much control some of the trucks can maintain.

The truck pictured here unfortunately didn't win the competition but gave one heck of a show. And guess what? It's a female driver! Bailey Shea Williams of Team Scooby-Do. Williams fellow competitor driver, Becky McDonough of Team El Torro Loco won the Wheelie Competition. Let’s give it up for the amazing talent of those two women.

The overall calculated score winner went to Morgan Kane of Team Max-D. More of the challenges and competitions included; completing the obstacle course in the fastest time, ATV Racing, the Donuts Competition, Speedster Obstacle Course, and lastly, the Freestyle event.  As each truck rolled up to the ramps of the obstacle their theme music was playing. Most were from the 80’s which was super fun, I totally loved their music choices.

Of the six competitions in the show I think the Wheelie competition was my favorite, partly because of so much air they can get and the control. The girls seem to like the Freestyle event the most only because of the trucks jumping over two junk cars. My fiancé really enjoyed the revving engine of Grave Digger's truck which he says, “It was insanely loud”.  Even when one of the trucks crashed, it was exciting.

There were a couple of crowd participation activities such as, the Wave, and a signed soccer ball being kicked into the section of the crowd that was the loudest. In addition to giving away tickets to next year’s show. Speaking of which, they were offering a pre-sale of tickets to next year’s event for this year’s prices.

I recommend this event to anyone that loves a little thrill and excitement. Warming though, it is extremely loud, so be sure to bring ear plugs or ear protection for everyone, especially the kids.  They do have ear phones for sale at the event, but they cost $20 - $25 a set.
