Review

Derby Dinner Playhouse opened their 2017-2018 Children’s Musical Theatre Series this past weekend with the musical HOW I BECAME A PIRATE!  This is one of my boy's favorites books and the second time in 9 years that we have seen this show on the Derby Dinner Stage!  Yep, you heard me right, we have been going to Derby Dinner to see the amazing children's theater shows they have been doing for 9 hole years!  The boys absolutely love it!

AARRRGH!  Who wants to be a pirate?  In this story, young Jeremy Jacob is recruited by Captain Braid Beard for a swashbuckling pirate adventure.  Join Jeremy as he goes on a wild journey on a pirate ship to bury treasure, all the while learning from and teaching the pirates, and winding up back in his own backyard!  Henry Stern plays Jeremy Jacob and does a superb job of keeping up with all of the adult actors on stage, he is certainly a pro!  My boys were really able to relate to him since he was young!  He made the show real to them, they believed they could run off and become pirates just like him!  The cast of pirate that featured Michael Drury, Bill Hanna, Robert Thompson, Kevin Crain, Lem Jackson, Shaquille Towns. and Alfred Jones were all wonderful!  I loved how each one took their character and made them unique.  They had the boys laughing the entire time!

This production is a musical adaptation based on the best-selling children’s book written by Melinda Long with illustrations by David Shannon.  The book, music, and lyrics for HOW I BECAME A PIRATE were written by Janet Yates Vogt and Mark Friedman.

HOW I BECAME A PIRATE is under the direction of Jim Hesselman.

All public performances of HOW I BECAME A PIRATE feature a kid friendly menu and are one hour in length.  This production is most suitable for ages 3 - 12.
