I attended the opening night production of Copacabana at Derby Dinner Playhouse last week and was immediately transported to a world of colorful music, Barry Manilow style!  It was just what was needed to try to pull out of this winter slump everyone has been in lately!  Spring is right around the corner and you can definitely feel it from this energetic and upbeat cast, as they take you to Havana and back all in a few hours!  The showgirls and costumes were so vivid and fun!

“Her name was Lola. She was a showgirl….” Barry Manilow’s Grammy Award-winning song is brought to life on the Derby Dinner stage! COPACABANA presents the story of Lola as told through the eyes of Stephen, a present day aspiring songwriter whose imagination takes him back to a time when “music and passion were always in fashion.”  A love letter to the Technicolor musicals of the 1940’s, COPACABANA is full of huge, splashy production numbers with sensational choreography and unforgettable new Barry Manilow songs like “Dancing Fool”, “I Gotta Be Bad”, and “Havana, Caramba”.

The book for COPACABANA was written by Barry Manilow, Jack Feldman, and Bruce Sussman, with music by Barry Manilow.  Derby Dinner’s production of COPACABANA is under the direction of Lee Buckholz with choreography by Heather Paige Folsom, and musical direction by Scott Bradley.  The cast will include Kayla Peabody, Jillian Prefach, Cami Glauser, Nick Fitzer, Jordan Cyphert, John Vessels, Sara King, and more!

Jordan Cyphert (Tony/Stephen) is a true triple threat, singing, dancing, and acting his way through the entire show flawlessly.  Kayla Peabody (Lola/Samantha) portrays his partner who is a naive young woman from OK, true to character with her accent and all!  Comedic performances provided by Cami Glauser (Gladys) and John Vessels (Sam) kept us laughing throughout the entire production.  This large cast pulls off several wonderfully entertaining musical production numbers!
