Day out with Thomas Review & Giveaway!
My family and I went to the Day out with Thomas event last weekend at the KY Railway Museum in New Haven, KY. This event is so much more than just a train ride and I love that there are so many interactive experiences for the kids! I highly recommend getting there at least 2 hours before your train ride, or allowing for 2 hours after your train ride to experience everything the event has to offer!
We first checked in and received our maps and schedule. We were told to be at our train gate 20 mins. before departure time but until then we were free to get our map stamped and walk around. If you got all four areas stamped on your map from the various stations, you could turn them in for a free gift at the gift shop before you left. We visited some of the kid-friendly attractions such as the temporary tattoo station where the kids could chose which train they wanted. My 3 year old loved the train table Imagination Station area. There were several large train tables and Mega Blocks tables set up where kids could play together.
I remembered from years past that a line usually forms along the fence area where Thomas pulls in, for pictures with Thomas. So, about that time, I sent my husband to get in the small line at the fence while the kids and I went over to the petting zoo, the spin art station, and the mini train ride. It was great because they didn't have to stand and wait and when we saw Thomas coming into the station, we joined my husband so they could all get their photo in front of Thomas.
By this time in the afternoon it was starting to warm up so we went inside for a little while and toured the museum and let the kids watch the model trains. I had noticed that Sir Topham Hatt did a meet n greet in the museum as well and we were about 10 mins. out from his next appearance time. There were not many people in there at the time, but I decide to go ahead and start the line at the rope. I am glad I did because it quickly grew. Again, it worked out well because my husband walked the kids around the museum while I waited. The kids were excited to have their photo taken with Sir Topham Hatt.
After this, we went back outside and let the kids play a round of mini-golf and bounce in the bounce house. I went to the food station and grabbed some juices and chips for everyone and then it was time to board our train! I was glad we could take snacks. Strollers are not allowed, but there is a parking area for them right outside the train.
We boarded the Alta Lake car, an air-conditioned dining car, which was decorated with colorful banners and Thomas and Friends posters. The conductor came around to punch everyone's ticket.
The train backed out of the station and we were off. As we looked out the windows, we were able to see old train parts like wheels, flatbed cars, boxcars, hopper cars, and more. The kids loved every minute of it! After about 20 mins. or so, you come to a stop and then the train goes back the other way. The kids are presented with a Jr. Engineer Certificate before they depart!
Once we were back at the station we ended the day by watching the puppet show, listening to the storytelling hour and visiting the gift shop for the free gifts. The kids both got cool Thomas Mega Blocks and a rotating dictionary of sorts. They were excited! It was a great time and I highly recommend it to anyone with little train lovers in their house!
Thomas is back this weekend so be sure to plan ahead and purchase your tickets!
